Well the year is marching on and holiday season is well and truly upon us. And while it’s a time for relaxing and recharging, it can also be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re recovering from a mastectomy. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with some practical tips to help you navigate your summer holiday with comfort and confidence. 🏃♀️💪👍
Packing Essentials
Traveling soon after breast surgery can be a bit tricky, but with the right stuff in your bag, you’ll be much more prepared!
Comfortable Clothing
- Post-Surgical Bras: Make sure you pack enough of these to allow for washing and wearing. Front closures are a lifesaver when it comes to getting dressed without too much effort.
- Loose, Soft Tops: Think cool and breathable. Loose-fitting tops will be your best friends and skim easily over your breast form.
- Layering Pieces: Cardigans, wraps, shawls—anything you can easily take on and off will keep you comfy no matter where you are.
- Swimwear: You can buy specialist swimming costumes that are pocketed, much like your mastectomy bra, to hold a breast form so even if you aren’t planning to swim (always check with your surgeon first) you can easily sunbathe without feeling self-conscious.
- Swim Forms :Pack a swim form to use while sunbathing and swimming. They are lighter than a regular breast form and ribbed at the back to help with air flow and water drainage.
Medical Supplies
- Medications: Bring all your meds, especially any pain relief. Keep them in your carry-on so they’re always handy.
- Dressings and Bandages: Extra dressings and bandages are a must, just in case.
- Travel Pillows: A small pillow can make car rides or flights so much more comfortable.
- Medical Information: Carry a summary of your medical history, prescriptions and emergency contact info.
- Doctor’s Note: If you need any special help or considerations from your hotel, a note from your doctor explaining your recent surgery can be super helpful.
Self-Care Items
- Moisturisers and Skincare: Your skin might be extra sensitive, so bring gentle moisturisers to keep it nourished and happy. Eloise loves the natural skin care ranges from Bare, all hand made in the UK and super gentle on the skin.
- Heat Packs: These are great for soothing any muscle soreness or discomfort.
Managing Energy Levels
Holidays can be busy, and it’s important to manage your energy so you can enjoy each day with family.
- Listen to Your Body: Take breaks and rest whenever you need to. Your body is healing, so give it the time it needs.
- Limit Activities: Pick the events and activities that matter most to you. It’s totally okay to say no to some things to save your energy.
- Stay Active, but Pace Yourself
- Gentle Exercises: Gentle exercises like walking or stretching can help boost your energy without wearing you out.
- Physical Therapy: Stick with your physical therapy exercises as recommended. They can help keep you strong and flexible.
- Healthy Eating: Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. Try to avoid too much sugar and caffeine—they can lead to energy crashes.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated can keep your energy levels up.
The holidays after a mastectomy can be a bit challenging, but with a little planning and self-care, you can enjoy this special time. Remember to prioritise your comfort and well-being, and don’t hesitate to lean on family and friends for support.
